The Year of the Lord’s Favour part 2

22nd April 2021 by Bernice Hopper

The Year of the Lord’s Favour part 2

The second post about the series of talks based in Luke, chapters 4-9, starting with the launch of Jesus’ ministry.  Links to the podcasts are in the headings.

He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”  Luke 4:17-21

At the feet of Jesus

Luke 7: 36-50
Becky looked at the story of the woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears, wipe them dry with her hair and anointed him with expensive perfume. Becky showed the contrast between the woman’s behaviour and the host of the meal, Simon the Pharisee. The whole incident was messy and emotional. The Pharisee was offended, but Jesus showed the woman grace and forgiveness.

The Authority of Jesus

Luke 8: 22-56
The book of Luke invites us to look at the nature of Jesus. Rob used the encounters with Jesus in Luke 8:22-56 to show confirmation of Jesus’ authority over situations in the lives of those he met and in our lives.

Victory in Perseverance

Luke 8: 4-21
Paul set the parables in this passage into the cultural context of the time. He spoke about how the principles found in the parable of the sower applied to us in terms of patience, maturity, perseverance and victory.

Something, Nothing and Everything

Luke 9: 1-17
Rob encourages us to return to the simplicity of the message of the gospels, showing people that Jesus is good news. Jesus gave everything when we deserved nothing, which means everything to everyone.

Who is Jesus?

Luke 9: 18-51
In the last in the series, Simon asked Who is Jesus? Through this passage we discovered that Jesus is the Christ of God, the Messiah. He is the Son of Man (Daniel 7), the Son of God, the teacher, the healer. The greatest One. Is this who Jesus is to you?
