The Garments of God
In a previous blog post, The Hem of His Garment, we explored the significance of clothing in the Bible, focusing particularly on the hem. In this post, we’ll delve into the descriptions of God and Jesus and examine the spiritual garments that the Bible encourages us to wear.
Isaiah’s Vision
In Isaiah’s time, kings wore long trains to signify their superiority. When a king defeated another king, the victor would cut off the train of the defeated king and add it to his own, making his train longer to demonstrate his growing power.
In Isaiah’s vision, God’s train filled the entire temple, symbolising His unparalleled glory and power. This imagery powerfully conveys that He is the King of kings:
“In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple.” (Isaiah 6:1)
The people of the time, familiar with Solomon’s Temple, a magnificently decorated structure described in 1 Kings 6-7, would have understood the profound significance of Isaiah’s words.
White Clothing
White clothing in the Bible often symbolises purity.
Matthew’s description of Jesus at the Transfiguration highlights this symbolism:
“His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.” (Matthew 17:2)
Similarly, Mark 9:2-3 states:
“His clothes became dazzling white, far whiter than any earthly bleach could ever make them.”
John’s Vision
In Revelation, John describes a vision of Jesus among seven golden lampstands:
“And when I turned, I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest.” (Revelation 1:12-13)
The long robe signifies Jesus as a judge and high priest, while the golden sash denotes priestly authority and purity.
The Armour of God
Ephesians 6:10-16 encourages believers to put on the full armour of God daily. This spiritual armour includes:
• The Belt of Truth
• The Breastplate of Righteousness
• Feet Fitted with Readiness
• The Shield of Faith
• The Helmet of Salvation
• The Sword of the Spirit
