Who Do You Think You Are?

28th February 2019 by Bernice Hopper

Who Do You Think You Are?

There’s a well know television programme, Who Do You Think You Are?, that takes a celebrity each episode through their ancestry with the help of various researchers and historians. They follow their family tree back through the generations finding sad, happy or inspiring stories of people in the past. Sometimes they even find they are related to royalty.

As Christians we can do the same. We can trace our lineage back and find we too are related to royalty. But we don’t need researchers and historians. We can look at our family tree laid out in Matthew 1:1-17.

You will rightly say that this is the genealogy of Christ. But in the Bible it also says we are co-heirs with Christ.
For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs – heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. Romans 8:14-17

Who do you think you are?

So often we allow negativity into our thoughts and in doing so, allow lies to take hold. Lies that tell us that we are not enough – not good enough, not pretty enough, not eloquent enough, just not enough! And the sad thing is that we have a tendency to become what we think. So if we believe the lies and think we’re not good enough, rather than fighting it – we stop trying. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.

But who does God say you are?

He says:
You are a new creation
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17

You are adopted into His family
In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will. Ephesians 1:5

You are His child
For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. Romans 8:14

You are part of His royal family
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9

God thinks we’re more than enough. He made us in His image and when we come to him, he extends mercy and grace to us. He showers us with forgiveness and love.

What more can we ask?
