Red Letter Days: Caleb’s daughter
You can read this story in Joshua 15:13-19
Achsah was excited. This was the BEST day of her life. She was going to marry a mighty warrior, a courageous soldier who had picked up the gauntlet thrown down by her Dad!
She was a just a young girl when her people came to the Jordan but she never tired of the stories of that multitude who trusted their lives to Yahweh and His Promise to bring them safely across the torrent of the River Jordan.
The priests’ tentative steps as they ventured into the river bed, the waters that ceased with that step of faith – she had seen it with her own eyes!
How the battle at Jericho was won by their shouts of praise had made her dizzy with amazement and relief. God had done it and the walls had fallen.
She had watched her father Caleb fighting for their land. How brave he was, and how proud was she. The stories of these exploits, adventures and conquests would be handed down for centuries to come.
Her wise Dad knew her every dream. Not just any man would be a good enough husband for his beautiful laughing girl. He set up a challenge for would-be suitors to rout one of the tribes that stood in the way of their inheritance.
And Othniel had triumphed, and won his girl! Now they were to be married and Achsah discovered in him a new hero that she could love with all her heart.
The wedding gift
Not every girl would be as delighted with her wedding gift as Achsah – a field! A wonderful gift that made her smile. And now for her request: the upper and lower springs. She had no doubts that Caleb would say yes. He knew her desire for a fruitful and fulfilled life, all those stories had planted some wonderful things in her heart that he could never deny.
And Achsah was blessed with her man, her field and her springs. The icing on the cake, a fruitful life with a great man who would later become a judge in Israel.
She had her part in the story of Israel and speaks to us today of mankind’s desire to make a difference in our day and generation – to make ‘it’ count, however small the contribution.
Achsah’s Yahweh loved her story as much as He loves ours. He has placed things in our hearts which stir us and call us into more of who He made us to be. Knowing that our Father’s hand is open and He is willing to add ‘springs’ to out ‘field’ gives us confidence to ask.
Our Father gives us the springs that give our stories LIFE, because He knows our dreams and every heartbeat.
We just have to ask our Dad!
