Know what we are called to do

3rd October 2024 by Bernice Hopper

Know what we are called to do

Our aim as Jubilee Church is to build a community of people who know who they are, who know what they’ve got and who know what they are called to do.

In this third and last post Bernice and Simon look at what we are called to do.

The Great Commission

Jesus’ final instruction to his disciples was that they should ‘make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you’. Matthew 28:18-20

Earlier in their time together Jesus had sent out the disciples in pairs and had given them authority to heal the sick, cast out demons and preach good news to the poor. ‘When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.’ Luke 9:1-2

What we are called to do

As disciples of Jesus we too are called to heal the sick, cast out demons, preach good news to the poor, and make disciples who change the world.

We are also called to love. Jesus was asked which was the greatest commandment. He replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31

The heart of being called

Even though there are things we are called to do as disciples it’s easy to focus on these and miss the fact that right at the heart of our calling is that we are called to be. In Mark’s account of Jesus appointing the Twelve disciples we read, ‘Jesus appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons’. Mark 3:14-15

Central to the call to discipleship is the purpose of being with Jesus. This is an expression of our love for God. It is as we spend time with God, loving Jesus, and listening to the Holy Spirit that we are equipped to follow Him. It is only from this place of being with Jesus that we are able to fulfil the things we are called to do.

A corporate call

The great thing is that as we follow this call we don’t have to do it alone. It is an individual call, but also a church-wide call. The example we are given is of the disciples going out in twos and supporting one another in the work that Jesus called them to. We can work together through the support of our Life Groups and other members of the church. We are a family together supporting and loving one another.

An individual call

In our last post we talked about the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and the spiritual gifts we have been given. These are for strengthening our church community and empowering us to follow the call placed on our lives. We each have our own personalities and gifting to work out God’s call. Each of us has been called to follow Jesus by being with Him and then going wherever He leads. As you listen to some of the testimonies below allow God to speak to you and remind you of what He has called you to do.
