Discipleship Series part 3
The theme for much of the teaching this year at Jubilee has been Discipleship. This post gathers together the third part of the teaching with links to the podcasts and a short introduction to each one.
A Lifestyle of Learning

‘Disciple’ means ‘learner’ and so we are all on this journey together of learning to be like Jesus. This learning is not so much about study and books although it can be and these things may help us in our learning but discipleship is more to do with a life style of learning.
The whole Christian life is about this because there is just so much more to know and experience of God and what he has done for us.
Leading from the Secret Place

Becky told us that being a disciple means being a leader. As we follow Jesus, we are making way for others to follow too.
The influence of healthy, thriving leaders who know that their first calling is to be with Jesus, developing a secret place lifestyle where their roots grow deep in Him; produce healthy, thriving discipling environments. Everything we learn and receive from the Father in the secret place is for us to release in others. That’s what makes us leaders.
Discipleship is about Obedience

Obedience has to be learned and if you are a disciple of Jesus you will already have been finding this out. The Father is ‘always working’ to renew our minds with the truth, reshaping our fallen state into the image of Jesus, conforming us to the knowledge of his will.
He does this by the work of his Spirit in us often through a series of ‘kairos’ moments in our lives – God inspired interruptions – where he draws our attention to areas of work, places of brokenness and moral failure that he wants to restore in us helping us to live differently.
Fruitful Living

John 15: 1 – 8 &16 The vine has no other purpose to exist than to produce fruit and lots of it. This is a promise for us as disciples of Jesus. We are called to fruitfulness – to live fruitful lives. Do you want to know the will of God for your life? Listen: ‘…I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit–fruit that will last.”
The Father is committed to our fruit bearing! Are you prepared to submit to his prunings? His liftings up? His cleansings and trainings? In this is a great co-operation – working together with God for his purposes.
Discipleship is about Rest
Rest is very important to God, it’s how he designed us, he even commanded it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace that he has hardwired into who he has made us to be. Learn especially how to work from a place of rest. God has designed us to rest to work not the other way around.
But this is going to take some adjustment and you may have already neglected this important emphasis of rest and you need to take a break. Repent and change the way you think and take a long hard look at that diary!
Discipleship involves Prayer

And so in response to their request the Lord gave his disciples (and also to us) a pattern of prayer to teach them how to pray. So he says Matt 6:9-13 ‘This, then, is how you should pray:’.
Jesus gave us this pattern of prayer as a training tool, a template for prayer, which we can structure our prayers around.
I hope you have found it useful to have the Discipleship series grouped together on the blog. Enjoy the teaching.
