Disciples on a Mission

9th November 2017 by Bernice Hopper

Disciples on a Mission

During the past few weeks we have been introduced to the next part of our series working through the book of Matthew. This follows on from our discipleship series, which we have featured on the blog.

Disciples on Mission

We are believing that God will equip Jubilee Church for mission. At the end of chapter 9 Matthew finishes his collection of miracle stories and sayings about discipleship with a slight change of direction towards the mission and ministry of Jesus…and his disciples.

Read: Matt 9: 35-38

This is what discipleship is for – not a self-help programme to help us live better – although we will, neither is discipleship a model for self-improvement, although there will of course be some of that too – no this is where being discipled by Jesus will always lead us: to the mission of Jesus.

Authority given and demonstrated

Read: Matt 10: 1-8

Jesus’ mission to change the world starts with giving his disciples authority to perform the mission they are being sent out to do…

Power comes from the Holy Spirit

Read: Acts 1:1-8
We need to be full of the Holy Spirit.
We need to cultivate our relationship with the Holy Spirit.
We need to learn how to generate power

Finding out what we have got

We have been finding out about how Jesus equips us for mission. It’s about knowing who we are but also about what we’ve got. Over the years we’ve done quite a lot on identity – knowing who we are. Knowing what we’ve got involves a whole other level of experience and confidence.

Do you know what you have got? Rob suggested that it is only as we step out and go out that we begin to discover what God has given us.

Read: Acts 3:1-10
